Referring Providers
Most specialty health care providers require the need to track patient referrals and insurance carrier preauthorizations. Let’s first look at referring medical providers and what they do. Referring providers like a general physician, pediatrician, or dentist will refer a patient to another provider to complete additional work on the patient that this initial provider cannot do. For example, a patient is injured in an auto accident and goes to a chiropractor for a back adjustment. The chiropractor feels that the injuries might be more serious and refers the patient to an Imaging Center to get a Spine MRI.

The chiropractor waits for the results before adjusting the patient’s back.
The imaging center will track how their patients are being referred to them. In this case the imaging center will normally indicate in their practice management software that the chiropractor referred the patient. They can now run reports to identify the number of patients, charges, payments and adjustments this medical chiropractor is sending to them daily, monthly and yearly. |
It’s also important to note that when a health care provider refers a patient to a specialist a preauthorization maybe required. It all depends on the CPT or Procedure code that will be performed on the patient. It’s vital to any business that the practice management billing software captures the pre-authorization; and then assigns them correctly to the right visit.
