Medical Insurance

Collecting a patient’s medical insurance health benefits prior to being seen with a health care provider is one of the single most important actions a medical front office representative can do.  It’s vital to the health and vitality of a medical office to collect accurate patient information and to have the needed time to contact the health insurance carrier and validate the medical health information is accurate. Medical front office employees are normally required to collect the following information which is also necessary to check patient’s health insurance eligibility.
Insurance effective date, insurance coverage including: primary, secondary, tertiary, workers compensation, auto insurance, or DME,  the health insurance carrier name, the health insurance carrier address, health insurance carrier eligibility phone number, the subscriber of the health insurance carrier, the subscriber’s basic information like social security number, date of birth; and the subscriber identification number. It’s also important to be able to indicate the HIPAA relationship of the patient to the subscriber of the health insurance carrier.

If your practice management software is interfaced with a electronic claims clearinghouse like RelayHealth or Emdeon at this point you will select to check patient’s health insurance eligibility. Within a few seconds you will receive the insurance carrier results in a 271 format. This step can eliminate the need to call the health insurance carrier on each patient essentially saving your medical office hundreds of manual hours each month.
